Delivery governance for a design-led renovation studio in the U.S.
How Finch Home Studio, an interior design and renovation studio in Cary, North Carolina, structured its "observe, decide, build" process to keep renovations on schedule and faithful to the design — with vendor, contractor, material-order and delivery management as a core discipline.
A home renovation is a supply chain disguised as a creative project: several trades working in sequence, a dozen or more vendors, material orders with multi-week lead times, deliveries that must arrive in the right order, and a design that only survives if someone checks every substitution and every site decision against it. In the Research Triangle market — post-2000 homes with builder-grade finishes — most homeowners start by looking for a contractor and only later discover they needed a plan. Finch's challenge was to turn design into a delivery service without becoming a general contractor.
We applied delivery-governance principles: decisions before execution, documentation a third party can bid and build from, and a single accountable owner protecting the plan during construction. The process settled into three phases — observe how the family uses the home, decide every layout, material and finish in 3D before construction, and build with coordination of vetted, licensed contractors.
